6. The Hero We Don't Entirely Deserve

Predator Boyd Holbrook
Warner Bros.

Somewhat unfortunately, Boyd Holbrook is not Arnold Schwarzenegger. He's not Danny Glover even. Hell, he can't even compete with Adrien Brody. He's not quite the kind of hero you hang this sort of franchise movie on, because he's not charismatic enough and not knowing enough to be the in-point for all the silliness.

Perhaps it's because one of the film's big narrative tricks essentially undermines him on purpose, he's just not really all that memorable. He does try his best, spitting out some dialogue that could do well as t-shirt slogans, but he feels somewhat lost in a movie that really wants a hero from the 1980s but ends up stuck with someone more modern and less exciting.

It's an unfortunate reality that he's also upstaged entirely by the excellent Trevante Rhodes too, because you'll spend most of the time wishing he was the hero.
