The Predator Review: 5 Ups & 6 Downs
3. Some Of The Characters Are A Little Under-Nourished
It may be because Shane Black was so closely involved in the original Predator and knew that the crew behind Arnold Schwarzenegger were essentially just cannon-fodder, but The Predator has a bit of an issue with character balance. Sure, the dynamic between some of them is infectious at times, but you'll struggle to remember a single thing Alfie Allen does and unfortunately, Olivia Munn's Casey Bracket could be removed without any sort of problems to the plot.
When she's held up as a sort of paragon for girl power (though her idea of that seems to be telling people to "grow a dick" and get in the fight), that's somewhat fatal. And the idea that a biologist could do some of the things she does is ludicrous to the point of groaning.
Elsewhere there are problems with Sterling K. Brown's one-dimensional Corporation Guy and the other walking caricatures, but once you realise that they're probably SUPPOSED to be cliches, it's more forgivable.
