The Scary Movies Ranked From Worst To Best
2. Scary Movie
The original Scary Movie does not get the credit that it deserves for saving the parody genre. This film indeed inspired so many awful productions that fill most worst films of all time lists, but it's unfair to hold that against it.
Introducing the structure of parodying everything relevant at the time made the first instalment in this franchise stand out completely. But part of what made this film work is that the group of characters that filled it all had a distinct personality. The Wayans were hilarious, Farris and Hall were outstanding in their positions, and Shannon Elizabeth had a great role.
The film has this childish vibe to it that makes it feel entirely appropriate for a young audience that were tired of seeing movies treated with severity. It's an easy watch that has a lot of funny moments throughout that you can simply turn your brain off and enjoy.
Special officer Doofy is an excellent example of how the films took nothing with nuance or subtlety. Scream introduced a character that seemed slightly dim, so the parody completely turned his character into a man child.
Nothing was subtle, and everything was in your face, it gave the film a real identity and has kept it fun to this day.
