The Scary Movies Ranked From Worst To Best
1. Scary Movie 2
The first sequel in the series grabbed everything that people liked about the initial film and took it even further. The jokes were sillier, the characters were louder, and the gross-out humour was stronger. This came together to make the film feel ridiculous but utterly appropriate as a sequel to an already absurd feature.
It took a different approach from the last and looked more at an entire genre rather than mocking a specific movie. They established their own narrative out of haunted house clichés and filled it with references to similar projects like The Exorcist, Poltergeist, The Haunting and more. This holding device meant that they weren't just limited to movie references but could put a lot of their own personality into the film.
Additions to the cast such as Tim Curry, Christopher Masterson and David Cross also helped to pack out the characters with some more energy and comedy. Also, Chris Elliott as the weird butler Hanson is one of the best parts of the entire series. He was incredibly funny and entirely quotable. It is unfortunate that this focus on carving their own path and generating great characters didn't occur in the rest of the series.
If you want a film this Halloween that will make you laugh instead of scream, then you have to revisit this ridiculous example of the early 2000s.
