The Single Biggest Mistake Each Star Wars Movie Has Made

7. Rogue One - The Characterisation Problem

Rogue One is pretty awesome overall and suggests an exciting, thematically diverse future for the franchise, but it wasn't perfect and suffered in particular from its underdeveloped characters.

Although the performances are mostly strong, nearly all of the Rogue One characters could've used more backstory and development, even the better ones such as Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) and Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen). It's a sad comment that the only character who feels fully formed and developed is the android K-2SO (Alan Tudyk).

The two biggest problems are Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed) and protagonist Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), who are both perfectly well-played but never work as characters. With Rook, all that's ever known about him is that he's "the pilot" (no, watch it back, that's literally all anyone ever says about him) while Jyn Erso is a sulky, underdeveloped and annoying bore and a poorly-written lead.

There's also Saw Gerrera (Forrest Whitaker, who gives one of the worst performances of his career), an embarrassingly bad side character, although luckily he isn't in the movie for long.

Rogue One is still a four-star film, but it could've been even more powerful with a more engaging cast of characters.
