The Single Greatest Thing In Each MCU Movie
2. Black Widow - The Fantastic Opening Credits
Black Widow, the MCU's return to the big screen after an absence of nearly two years (thanks to a certain pandemic) peaked in the opening and hinted at something far better than we ultimately got.
There is a lot to be said for naming Florence Pugh's performance as the film's best element, but Yelena was a fairly familiar quip-machine overall and while Pugh's work was strong, it's far from her most interesting or challenging work. Instead, the film's opening credits deserve the honour here.
The film subverts expectations by having an opening credits sequence, which the MCU doesn't normally do, and it's an absolute doozy. A brilliant, visually striking montage of Natasha Romanoff's past that has an atmospheric cover of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' as its soundtrack, this is an incredibly effective sequence that opens the film on a soaring high.
It's certainly a hell of a lot more interesting than anything else from this mediocre movie, which is a disappointing and uneven solo movie for Black Widow that feels like it came out at least five years too late.
This was yet another mediocre MCU flick. Is the franchise running out of steam?
