The Week Of Review: 1 Up & 8 Downs

1. It Tries To Be Emotional...And Fails

The Week Of Adam Sandler Crying
Netflix

Because this is a movie about a wedding and two fathers coming to terms with the state of their lives, of course there's a ham-fisted attempt to inject some emotion into the mix.

Rock's character wistfully regrets not being there more for his family, while Sandler's is fearful for a world where his daugher is no longer reliant on him. They're trite themes but, with the right script, they can work just fine.

Here, however, the emotional declarations come after almost two hours of assaulting the viewer with offensive and laugh-free "humour", and so you'd be forgiven for not shedding a single tear.

The attempt at emotion is so earnest and straight-faced it ironically ends up being quite laughable, if not embarrassing. Not even a last-minute Billy Joel-scored slow-dance works, so you know they really screwed it up.

As terrible as this film is, there's one not-so-bad takeaway from it. Every cloud has a silver lining, right?...
