The Wolf Of Wall Street: 5 Things We Learned From The Fast-Paced Trailer

4. Matthew McConaughey Might Steal the Show

Matty If you would have told me a year ago that Matthew McConaughey might be able to upstage Leonardo DiCaprio in a film, I would have thought you were crazy. The former romantic comedy devotee and eternally unshirted actor just didn€™t turn in memorable performances. Something has just clicked in the guy and he has been tearing it up in the cinema. The streak started in earnest with The Lincoln Lawyer, although three years earlier his turn in Tropic Thunder showed a self awareness and devotion to character that offered a glimpse of things to come. Additionally he may be the best part of Magic Mike and that€™s a film directed by Steven Soderbergh (his second reference in this piece for those keeping track) about male strippers starring a charming Channing Tatum, so yeah€kind of a big deal. The two minute trailer highlights the importance of DiCaprio€™s performance but it is beautifully bookended by McConaughey. His performance is sleek and unhinged. Oscar talk has already begun around DiCaprio, because it€™s DiCaprio in a Scorsese film, so duh, but I think we need to keep a closer eye on McConaughey. If the trailer is any indication, he may be able to snatch the rug out from under DiCaprio.

Derek was the only engineer at Northeastern University taking a class on German film and turning a sociology assignment into an examination of Scorsese’s work. He blatantly abuses his Netflix account, but can never seem to get his Instant Queue below 200. Now working for the government, he fights the stigma that being good at math means you are not any no good at writing. I good write, very much. Follow Derek on Twitter @DerekDeskins.
