3. The Fourth Wall Will Be Broken
That illustrious fourth wall, the very thing that keeps us separate from the action on the screen has a storied past. Arising like many things in film do, from the theater, it is our window into the story. As quickly as it was named, the fourth wall was broken. Actors have been speaking and looking directly at the camera for ages now with varying degrees of success. Recently, Netflixs very own
House of Cards employed the trope ad nauseum drawing a cavalcade of criticism from many a viewer. It is only for a quick moment in the trailer, but its there, that fourth wall will be broken. As it has already been said, this really is DiCaprios show so it makes sense that he would address us directly in telling his story. Scorsese has flirted with breaking the fourth wall before, most notably in
Goodfellas; nevertheless I cannot remember when he has jumped in with both feet in the way he seems to be with this film. Lets hope its more like Zack Morris than Frank Underwood, you know, minus the time-outs.
