The film/television rights for the Punisher were tied up with the Defenders, which gave Netflix the ability to create a series around him, and by most accounts, the series was fantastic. John Bernthal nailed his performance as Frank Castle, otherwise known as everyone's favorite murderous vigilante, the Punisher.

The series ran for two seasons after a successful "backdoor pilot" in Daredevil's second season. Despite the popularity of the show, Netflix canceled it alongside all the other Marvel series it was airing, which has opened the door for the Punisher's return to the MCU over at Disney.

According to ScreenRant, the licensing agreement between Netflix and Disney allowed the former to air the series based on the character, but once the show was canceled, Disney had to lay off for two years. Once the two years had passed, the Punisher is fair game for a return to television on Disney+ or a first appearance in the MCU on the silver screen.

The second season of The Punisher was dropped in its entirety on January 18, 2019, and on February 18, 2019, Netflix canceled the series. Because of the two-year wait requirement, the character can turn up in the MCU no earlier than February 18, 2021.
