These Movie Plot Twists SUCK!

1. Serenity

Serenity Anne Hathaway
Aviron Pictures

In a move that felt cheaper than a wedding ring bought from Poundland in a sale, Serenity is a movie that decided to take a rather unexpected turn with its final plot twist, which in the realms of cinema should, in theory, have earned it a tonne of respect for original thinking, as after all the entire industry is built around Copy/Pasting.

Unfortunately for the film, there was a reason why no-one had tried their idea of "The characters were inside a video game all along" before because...well...that's utterly stupid considering the events we'd just witnessed. The setup of the plot before this point, revolving around a Fisherman who falls back in love with his ex-wife who then asks him to kill her husband for 10 million dollars was truly intriguing, as the chemistry between Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway was really engaging, as was the setup for how Dill the Fisherman would kill the target.

Yet throughout the main narrative we're shown splices of Dill's Ex with her son Patrick, a young boy who can be seen relentlessly tapping on a computer. Turns out that Patrick is actually making this scenario in a video game in order to deal with the real-life abuse he's suffering through from his step-dad. It's one of those twists that sounds like it could work on paper, but in practice robs the entire project of emotional weight as a ham-fisted message of resentment and revenge takes over.

Plus if we're being honest, this kid is putting Hideo Kojima to shame when it comes to absolutely bizarre video game premises. A fishing tycoon simulator cross Hitman-style action game with romance options that are actually your parents? How the hell do you even go about marketing that? It's so absurd from every single level!
