Thor: 10 Times The MCU Movies Were Better Than The Comics
4. He's More Tragic
Thor's life is laced with tragedy since his people are destined to be trapped in a recurrent apocalypse called Ragnarok. When this time comes, Asgard is destroyed, and its people are annihilated. As horrific as this period is, it's also cyclical, meaning Thor's kingdom and the Asgardians will always return.
However, Ragnarok is worse in the MCU since it's more absolute. Hela slew thousands of Asgardians. Heimdall, Odin, Voltstagg and Fandral are dead for good. Asgard was destroyed by Surtur. Even though Thor tried to lead the survivors, Thanos slaughtered most of them. And when Thor failed to kill the Mad Titan before he wiped out half of all life in the universe, he fell into a depression.
Now, Thor acting melancholic is nothing new in the comics. When he lost his arm and was stripped of his title of Thor, it was no surprise he became despondent and disillusioned. But despite being crippled physically and mentally, he did not turn his back on his heroic lifestyle.
But in Avengers: Endgame, we see Thor has been utterly broken by his failure. Even though the rest of the world is trying to move on after The Snap, Thor loses himself in booze, food, and his own self-loathing.
Interestingly, there was meant to be a montage showing Thor getting back into the shape so he would be back to his chiselled self for the final battle. Luckily, Chris Hemsworth fought to keep the character's rotund appearance, to emphasise how far he'd fallen and to make his redemption arc more satisfying.
