The original Thor comics were written during the height of the the Cold War. It's probably no surprise then that Stan Lee included a lot of anti-communist propaganda in his stories.

Journey Into Mystery #93 might have taken things a little too far. The issue features the first appearance of Radioactive Man, a Chinese scientist who gave himself radiation based superpowers in an attempt to kill Thor and destroy the USA.

Stan Lee might not have exactly understood how radiation works though. Radioactive Man's powers made him immune to getting hit on the head with a hammer somehow and also let him hypnotise Thor into tossing away Mjolnir (it's the same kind of logic that allows Magneto to use magnetism to deflect laser beams). He then prepared to blow up New York while the God of Thunder went to look for it.

Thor was able to find Mjolnir and then summoned a hurricane to blow Radioactive Man back to China where he exploded. Luckily, the explosion happened on a mountain and, again thanks to Stan Lee's lack of knowledge on nuclear physics, no-one died an excruciating death from the fallout.

Apparently, neither country saw this as a declaration of war.
