Thor: Ragnarok Review - 9 Ups & 4 Downs
2. Nobody Has Ever Had As Much Fun As Jeff Goldblum
Obviously, when you hire Jeff Goldblum, you know you're going to be getting a full-on Jeff Goldblum performance. He doesn't so much inhabit characters as wear them as an excuse to flex the muscles of his own established brand of quirk. And there's no way that will ever run out of appeal.
Sometimes, it can be a little jarring - like when he's asked to be a sci-fi, alien-fighting action man (as in Independence Day: Resurgence) - but the marriage of his oddness and Taika Waititi's material is one made in Heaven. He was made to play an aloof, arrogant Elder of the Universe, high on his own supply who has space orgies and mistreats flunkies and subjects in equal measure.
He's not even a villain, per se, because he's so damn charming that it's impossible to hate him even when he's doing detestable things. In short, it's one of the most complex character builds seen in the MCU, at the same time as it being a pure, unfiltered Goldblum performance. And you can tell he's having an absolute ball.
