5. Not Technically Original...
Offenders: Dark Shadows, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Frankenweenie, Batman, Sleepy Hollow, Ed Wood, Alice in Wonderland, Sweeney Todd, Planet of the Apes, Mars Attacks! Maybe it's a little harsh to accuse Tim Burton of lacking originality, but when you stop and think about it, Tim Burton takes a lot from stuff that isn't his own. While Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride, Vincent and the original Frankenweenie are mostly exclusive Tim Burton, everything else seems to have the words 'based on' somewhere on the back cover. Let me show you what I mean: Dark Shadows: Old TV Show Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: Does it even need saying? Mars Attacks!: Based on a card game. Ed Wood: It's a freaking biopic. Batman: Comic book. Frankenweenie: Now he's basing stuff on his own movies... Alice in Wonderland: I think this might just be based on something, yeah. While nobody's saying that Burton's direction and approach to these inspirations isn't entirely his own, this actually brings me to my next point...
