4. Unnecessary Creepiness (AKA: "Over-Burtonization")
Offenders: Alice in Wonderland, Batman Returns, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Let's not deny it, this one was always coming up. I'm not complaining that he's a dark guy - that's the one thing I love most about him - I'm complaining because he just seems to be being cruel and dark to recognizable icons without any real purpose. While the idea of growing up and grossing out Alice in Wonderland has been popular for a while now, was there any need for such a moody take on a childhood classic like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? Batman Returns is another good example. While opinion is mostly divided on the film, it's impossible to deny that while 'Batman' could have been directed by anyone, 'Batman Returns' was just too Burton. It wasn't try to give us a decent Batman movie, it was trying to give us a straight-up Tim Burton flick. 'Batman' was quite dark too, but it was normal, girtty, realistic dark, not fairy-tale, Tim-Burton-whimsical dark. While there's nothing with that and while I did enjoy 'Returns', I know what I wanted to see when I saw that movie, and it wasn't what I got. Maybe that's just me though. And do we even need to discuss the random masturbation joke in Dark Shadows that came the hell out of nowhere? I don't think I want to.
