Tim Burton Drinking Game: His Top 8 Cliches

3. The Outsider

Dark ShadowsOffenders: Dark Shadows, Edward Scissorhands, Corpse Bride, Beetlejuice, Alice in Wonderland Lydia Deetz. Edward. Barnabas Collins. Emily. Victor Van Dort. Vincent Malloy. Alice Kingsley. These are just some of the outsiders that are notable for just not fitting in. Oh, and having very pale faces. But that's not the funny part. The funny part is that this cliche in particular is the last nail in the coffin that proves that Edward Scissorhands and Dark Shadows are the same film. Really think about it. In one film we have a pseudo-supernatural outsider with a tragic back story, played by Johnny Depp, who is taken in by some overly Burtonish characters with Danny Elfman's music playing along all the way through. We get a couple of scenes of the outsider being socially awkward (and one of him being randomly sexualized for no apparent reason) that take up half the flick, leading up to the said outsider having to come to terms with his past at the climax. In the other film we have... wait, which was the other film again? I know it sounds like I'm criticizing Edward Scissorhands, which I'm not. I liked that movie when it first came out at the peak of Burton's career, while the ideas were still fresh in our minds. I just don't like the remake.
