Tim Burton: Ranking His Movies From Worst To Best

13. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)

A bloated exercise in Tim Burton excess, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will have both fans of the original and new-comers alike reaching out for the Gene Wilder original. Though it's arguably closer-matched to its source material, the film emanates an intoxicating sense of wrong-doing, as if Tim Burton has set out to make the most Tim Burton-esque film ever: in that sense, it feels like another bland entry in his canon with nothing to define it from the rest of his pictures. Depp, once again, is on hand to take the titular role, though the tone he strikes with Willy Wonka's character is vastly unappealing. Generally speaking, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is far from the worst movie ever made, but there's something oddly annoying about the whole experience - one that makes a re-visit to Burton's factory of little concern.
