I finally caught Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy myself yesterday at a sold out mid-afternoon public screening which, in an extremely rare sight, was packed to the rafters of adults mostly aged 40 and above. Only once since Titanic can I remember a movie bringing out that kind of sold out crowd and that was this year's The King Speech which went on to be a box office phenomenon in the U.K. Now it looks like Tinker Tailor is going the same way. The weekend's UK & Ireland box office results are in and Tinker Tailor Solider Spy earned £2.805 million from 382 sites, a per screen average of over £7,2000, becoming the third biggest 3 day September opening on record. The film is also the biggest opening weekend earner in the history of UK arm Studiocanal's! My personal thoughts? I LOVED the movie, just a damn fine spy thriller that really has no rights to be playing in modern day multiplexes (and that's a compliment!). As far as Oscars go... it's sure to be Best Picture nominated with one for director Tomas Alfredson (and let's hope the impressive box office convinces Studiocanal to give him the money to adapt the sequel) and obviously Gary Oldman who once again strips away everything from himself in the performance, a true Chameleon. Go out and see the film this week....
