It's a well-known fact that Titanic holds the record for being one of the joint-three movies to have won the most amount of Academy Awards, that being 11. So, when you step back and think about it, Bernard Hill, who played Captain Smith here and Théoden in Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (one of the other three movies), is one of the most highly acclaimed actors in Oscar history. Thus, he does leave some big shoes to fill.
When it comes to recasting the confident turned, heartbroken captain, it's easy to lean towards someone who has already proven his worth at sea, that being Liam Cunningham.
This actor is great at playing authority and boasts enough vulnerability to make his performances nuanced and three-dimensional. Watching as his version of Captain Smith loses control of the ship and makes the brave decision to go down with it would be a recipe for success, as he's likeable, confident, and already has the fluffy beard to pull it off.
