Titanic: How It Should Be Re-Cast In 2021
4. Ruth DeWitt Bukater - Gillian Anderson
Ruth was a character who - despite the film's bloated runtime - didn't get too much of a chance to shine.
She played the typical role of the overbearing and strict mother to the repressed protagonist and did it well. But, just when things got interesting after you learned about her dire financial situation, the ship began to sink, and she was shuffled off to a lifeboat, essentially disappearing from the film.
It's safe to say that whoever gets cast in this role would need to convey a lot in the little time they have, so why not go for the well-respected and constantly engaging Gillian Anderson? This actor has proven time and time again that she can knock it out of the park, and seeing her take this role would make perfect sense.
She would effortlessly establish the character as a cold-hearted woman looking out for her own interests. Still, she could also season Ruth with a sense of desperation and sadness, making her all the more interesting.
