5. My Best Friend's Wedding
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lPMzy4ncxg Relax those fists and give them a joyous clap. That's what Julia Roberts and company did in My Best Friend's Wedding, widely regarded now as the quintessential 90's romantic comedy. Plot-wise it's about as mediocre as Something Borrowed; girl (Julia Roberts) fights for the love of her old friend (Dermont Mulroney) who is currently betrothed to perfection Itself (Cameron Diaz). However, MBFW's is not nearly as asinine and 10 times more enjoyable than Something Borrowed, thanks in part to the enthusiastic direction of P.J. Hogan. Case in point: the now legendary (yep) scene in the film where all the principles gather at a restaurant for a pre-wedding banquet and break into a rendition of Dionne Warwicks "I Say a Little Prayer". Its a great character moment for Rupertt Everett (Julia's gay friend faking love for her to make Dermont jealous) as well as a testament to the sense of innocence that belonged to that wonderful era we call the 90's. Still, no matter what the time or talent, it took guts to even think you can (or should) pull this off in the middle of the movie.
