Top 10 Sporting Movies of All Time

8. Kingpin

Is bowling a sport? A lot of people in America would argue that it is; and this is the sport that the Farrely brothers chose to be the subject for their eagerly anticipated follow up to Dumb and Dumber. Sadly, despite amazing comedic turns by Woody Harrelson and Randy Quaid, as the oddball buddies, the film was a flop and actually convinced the Farrely€™s to go all out and hold nothing back with their next movie €“ There€™s Something About Mary. Woody Harrelson plays Roy Munson, an aspiring young bowler, with a mane of untameable hair who looks destined to dethrone the king of the bowling world Big Earn McCracken. But Big Earn gets the last laugh when Munson has his bowling hand cut off by a bunch of local bowlers that McCracken convinces Munson to con. Years later, a bald and bloated Roy gets a second chance at glory by managing a young Amish man with a talent for his trade. Together they set off across country to Reno to win the tournament, claim the money, save Ishmael€™s farm and give Roy a reason to live. All that stands in their way is the smouldering Vanessa Angel, the fact Ishamel is only two thirds as good as Roy thought (he bowls 15 frames instead of 10) and Big Earn, now sporting the world€™s greatest comb over. It€™s the most complete Farrely Brothers movie to date. Though it might not be quite as funny as Dumb and Dumber and lock the shock and gross out humour of Mary, it has the most solid structure and fleshed out characters and character journeys. It also features Bill Murray€™s best performance.

Frustratingly argumentative writer, eater, reader and fanatical about film ‘n’ food and all things fundamentally flawed. I have been a member of the WhatCulture family since it was known as Obsessed with Film way back in the bygone year of 2010. I review films, festivals, launch events, award ceremonies and conduct interviews with members of the ‘biz’. Follow me @FilmnFoodFan In 2011 I launched the restaurant and food criticism section. I now review restaurants alongside film and the greatest rarity – the food ‘n’ film crossover. Let your imaginations run wild as you mull on what that might look like!
