Top Gun: Maverick Review - 8 Ups & 2 Downs

4. The Oscar-Worthy Sound Design

Though the movie is obviously a visual feast beyond compare, just as strong is Maverick's blistering sound design.

From literally the opening seconds of the film through to its thunderous finale, this is a film that will make the most of your local cinema's beefy sound system.

The rumbling bass and surround sound are expertly calibrated to put the viewer in every moment of the various flights and dogfights, such that there's basically no doubt the film will receive a Best Sound nomination at next year's Oscars.

It'll certainly face stiff competition from Avatar: The Way of Water to win the gong outright, but on its own merits there are few other films out there right now boasting audio engineering this sophisticated, dynamic, and downright immersive.
