During their first viewing of the film's trailer, fans would've been relieved to see the familiar face of Kelly Macdonald return to reprise her role as Diane, the temptress from the Volcano nightclub that swept Mark Renton off his feet with her effortlessly cool rebuffing of a would-be suitor. He'd eventually spend the night in what he'd soon come to realise was the 15 year old girl's family home.

Beset by fears that he'd be imprisoned and that his fellow inmates will 'cut my balls off and flush them down the fuc***g toilet', Renton's attempts to sever ties with Diane are ultimately to no avail and she slowly becomes a welcome fixture in his life, even writing to him after he relocates to London.

In spite of her semi-prominent role in the original film, those behind the sequel had never declared that she'd be included in any capacity and it was a genuinely pleasant surprise to see her and Mark conversing once more, their evident chemistry shining through despite the fact that we're given a mere glance of the interaction. Although she is present in Welsh's 'Porno', the lack of announcement regarding her role had left many fans concerned that there'd been some form of reluctance from either Macdonald or those producing the film.

What remains a mystery is the nature of their relationship within this re-imagining although the brief look at the pair together features Diane enquiring as to whether Renton still takes heroin from behind a desk in what appears to be a plush corporate office. Whether her inclusion in the film is of any significance or a mere crowd-pleasing cameo is yet to be seen but it's nice to Macdonald return to the role which first introduced her to cinema-goers the world over.
