Trainspotting 2: 6 Biggest Talking Points From The T2 Trailer

3. The Self-referential Scenes

As to be expected from any film that captured lightning in a bottle and produced a seminal moment in counterculture, there is a great deal of expectation in regards to whether or not they'll be capable of not just recapturing the essence of its companion piece but logically and authentically furthering its legacy. Perhaps as a means of easing audiences back in to the sordid and duplicitous lives of Renton, Sick Boy, Spud and Begbie, the trailer features a handful of self-referential scenes which; depending on your outlook, either caused a warm nostalgic feeling or left you cynically concerned that it could become a carbon copy of the classic film.

Among these nods to its precursor include Bebgie's trademark primal howl of rage, the use of Underworld's 'Born Slippy', trips to the Scottish countryside, a daylight chase scene through the streets of Edinburgh and a visit to Renton's childhood bedroom that was the setting for the infamous 'junkie limbo' scene before the trailer is concluded with the sort of vehicular mishap and subsequent maniacal laugh that provided a fitting introduction to their world in 1996.

Perhaps above all else, we have an update take on the classic 'Choose Life' monologue; one which is riddled with the cynicism of the modern digital era and takes aim at the current socio-political climate which forces people to face 'a zero hour contract, a two hour journey to work and choose the same for your kids only worse.'

There's a distinct possibility that this will have been a purposeful decision on the part of those behind the trailer to place so many homages in this initial teaser but it is ultimately balanced out by footage that is unlike anything we'd laid eyes upon in Trainspotting.
