Even though the movie's overall visual presentation is disappointingly flat, there's little arguing with the actual fidelity of the VFX elements, which are uniformly terrific.

That is to say, the Transformers look absolutely fantastic throughout, no matter the dishwater-dull environments they're often featured in.

Despite the last two movies distancing themselves from the Bayformers years, the VFX work has smartly maintained consistency from a design and quality perspective.

The robots certainly look persuasively realistic for the most part, and when they dare to emote, it's believable, even if the script's attempts to wring tears from your eyes might not be quite so convincing.

For all of the movie's problems, the Transformers themselves at least look great.
