Uncharted Movie: 10 Important Developments You Need To Know
6. It Won't Retread Stuff You've Played In The Games
With any adaptation, there's a risk that trying to directly adapt the source material - page for page or pixel for pixel - can result in an inferior version of exactly the same story.
So, perhaps smartly, Levy isn't aiming for a direct adaptation in any way, shape or form. The director spoke to Nerdist about how he approached the project, and among other things, he said he wanted to give audiences something they hadn't already seen in any of the games.
“...for me, the kind of the big, like the aha moment, if you want to call it that, was I met with Tom Holland and he kind of put it really succinctly and saying, if we do the origin of Drake, that is something that we haven’t seen as the plot of games 1, 2, 3, 4... here’s maybe an opportunity to do a treasure-hunting action movie with attitude, with a protagonist - and a chapter of that protagonist’s life - that you can’t get for free, at home, by just playing the game."
“So, we’re trying to kind of take the spirit and the tone and the attitude of the game - and the crazy, visual spectacle of it - but apply it to this Drake chapter that you haven’t seen told."
Levy truly sounds passionate about this movie, and his wish to deliver something as original as possible is commendable. However, the most popular part of the Uncharted games has never been the young Drake segments, so it remains to be seen if building a franchise around this idea is the right move.
