With its brilliant stars at the absolute peak of their powers - charming, slightly dishevelled, desperate, crafty, horribly flawed - The Music of Chance is an odd-couple thriller about righting wrongs, men ensnaring themselves in a deadly web of their own making, and the cost of crime.
Gritty and bursting with urgency, the film of course works best as a display of great acting - with these stars, how could it not? - but it also soars high as a tale of unexpected double crosses and an assessment of desperate men doing desperate things.
It does its source material justice (the same-titled novel by the late Paul Auster is also worth seeking out), and what a great ride it is.
