3. Gunshot Outta Nowhere - House of the Devil
More than a decade before he hit the big leagues with the X trilogy, Ti West served up The House of the Devil - a brilliantly tense slasher film that persuasively adopts the style of horror films from the 1970s and 80s.
Protagonist Sam (Jocelin Donahue) is dropped off at a highly suspicious babysitting gig by her best pal Megan (Greta Gerwig), who while driving home meets a man on the side of the road, Victor (A.J. Bowen).
After a brief introduction, Victor asks Megan, "Are you not the babysitter?," and when she replies in the negative, he shoots her in the head without hesitation, blood splattering all over the windshield.
West's film is such a patient slow-burn up to this point and Megan is such a likeable, savvy character that her death comes as a huge surprise, all while Victor's line tellingly hints at the grimness in store for the actual babysitter, Samantha.
Plus, there's nothing flashy or sensationalist about it - she's killed mid-conversation by someone who does it without a flicker of emotion.
