8. The Roses
There admittedly weren't many folk hankering for a new adaptation of The War of the Roses, but the pairing of Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman as the warring central married couple is just too damn delicious to resist.
The Roses scored fair reviews but fell short of the early awards hype and performed middlingly at the box office, but for those among us who feel that there simply isn't enough mean-spirited, cynical black comedy these days, this contemporary reimagining is a massive breath of fresh air.
Cumberbatch and Colman are fantastic, because of course they are, and overall The Roses is just a good deal less-wacky than its rather kooky trailers suggested.
This has a nasty edge and commits to everything that suggests all the way to the riotous finish.
It also benefits from a stacked ensemble cast, including among its number Andy Samberg, Allison Janney, Ncuti Gatwa, Jamie Demetriou, Zoë Chao, and Kate McKinnon.
This absolutely feels like the sort of film that'll win itself a bigger audience on streaming, considering how difficult it is to coax audiences out of their home for big-screen dramedies these days.
