There's no getting around the fact that heist thriller Crime 101 feels like it was sent out to die.

Amazon barely marketed it in the lead-up to its February release despite the all-star cast, which, in combination with its blander-than-bland title and late review embargo, surely led many to assume that a turkey was on the horizon.

And sure, it's all very "we have Heat at home," but as filmmaker Bart Layton proves, that need not be a bad thing.

Crime 101 is lifting liberally from the Michael Mann ensemble crime thriller playbook in every fibre of its being, but it's also a gorgeously slick and compellingly acted example of familiar material done well.

The lack of pre-release press presumably contributed to it flopping at the box office despite ultimately positive reviews, though one suspects this is going to become something of a popular mainstay on streaming over the next few years.
