Barney the Dinosaur is an undeniable '90s icon, and actually already got his own feature film in 1998's widely loathed Barney's Great Adventure.
But in 2019, Mattel announced they were partnering with A24 and Oscar winner Daniel Kaluuya of all folk to produce a new Barney film, which The Bear's Ayo Edebiri will both write and star in.
Surprisingly for an A24 film, this apparently won't be some sort of ironic horror-flavoured riff on Barney but actually a more earnest reinterpretation of the source material, as a group of jaded millennials are transported into Barney's TV show.
While it's easy to see this as a woefully desperate ploy by Mattel to try and make Barney popular again after 20 years of anti-Barney jokes, there's been much praise for Edebiri's script around Hollywood.
Given the clear talent involved, it's easy to believe this will at least be interesting and go to some unexpected places.
