It's incredibly easy to sniff at the very idea of The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum - a cinematic prequel based on... something written by J.R.R. Tolkien, but nobody really seems to know what.

Either way, the whiff of desperation is pungent, and it didn't help that director Andy Serkis confirmed the role of Aragorn would be recast, with Viggo Mortensen not returning for undisclosed reasons.

But the casting of a younger Aragorn was ultimately the sliver of PR sunshine this production desperately needed, with Jamie Dornan recently landing the part of Strider.

Dornan has proven himself an exceptionally talented and versatile actor over the past decade-plus - the Fifty Shades franchise be-damned - and while Viggo Mortensen's legacy in the role casts a gigantic shadow, Dornan is an intriguing and yet genuinely unexpected choice to follow him.

Even if The Hunt for Gollum is as redundant as many expect it to be, Dornan's gonna crush as Aragorn.
