2014's animated comedy The Nut Job may have been absolutely terrible, but considering it grossed over $120 million against a mere $30 million budget, it's easy to see why a sequel happened.

Though The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature was similarly rubbished by critics, it didn't repeat the same box office success, netting a disappointing $68.7 million against a heftier $40 million price tag.

This underwhelming performance didn't kill the IP outright, though, as by 2019 a TV series called Nut Jobs! was in development, though seven years on it still hasn't materialised.

It was easy to see how, in the more cautious post-pandemic era, The Nut Job just wasn't a safe enough play for Hollywood, what with the second film's box office suggesting thunderous disinterest.

So what a surprise it was, then, when production company RedRover announced that a third Nut Job was indeed in the works.

One can only assume that the Nut Job live stage show - which, yes, was really a thing - was a bigger success than expected. Even so, ask the young people in your life if any of them can name even a single character from the Nut Job franchise.
