Us Review: 6 Ups & 3 Downs
1. It's Nowhere Near As Good As Get Out
There's been an enormous tidal wave of hype surrounding Us, and given the hugely unexpected success of Get Out, it's no surprise at all.
But the marketing and the reviews may well be setting audiences up for disappointment, because this is categorically a lesser film than Peele's debut in almost every way.
If you're expecting another trenchant and devastatingly timely social commentary movie with genre trappings, Us instead offers a more opaque "message" while placing a greater focus on genre thrills, which ultimately don't feel anywhere near as nourishing.
But again, by any typical standard Us is a very solid movie, albeit one that's sure to leave some viewers reeling from their expectations of another Get Out.
