Vacation: 10 Ill-Advised Comedy Movie Comebacks

4. Bewitched

Another mainstay of the US TV schedules was this supernatural sitcom, which starred Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha Stephens, a witch trying to keep a low profile as a happy homemaker. It was brought back in territories around the world (including a weird attempt at a pilot by the BBC featuring Sheridan Smith) but it was decades after the original series when Hollywood decided to create a movie.

The relatively simple premise got jettisoned pretty quick, as writer/director Nora Ephron went high concept, fashioning the idea around Will Ferrell as an actor doing a remake of Bewitched. He casts Nicole Kidman as his perfect Samantha only to discover she is an actual purveyor of black cats and cauldrons.

This needlessly convoluted approach ensured critics and audiences placed a curse on the film, which underperformed at the box office. Not even support veterans Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine could work the voodoo required to get the broomstick off the ground.
