First and foremost, Venom must standalone and cannot rely on the character's association with Spider-Man to pack out cinema auditoriums.

Sony don't really have a choice on this given that Marvel Studios now holds the movie rights to old Webslinger.

However, closing the door on Spider-Man appearing in future Venom movies would be a bad movie in the long run because there's more than one incarnation of Spidey.

Miles Morales is another version of the iconic character from Marvel's Ultimate universe and Sony appears to hold the rights to him, at least for the small screen since they have an animated feature film is in the works.

Handing Miles - the first black Spider-Man - his cinematic debut would be a bold move on Sony's part and it would certainly benefit future Venom movies if the protagonist could be played off against, and team up with, any version of Spidey.
