Venom 2: 8 Directors Sony Should Hire

7. Fede Álvarez

Álvarez has had more than his fair share of success over the past decade.

In 2013, he co-wrote and directed the Evil Dead remake to much acclaim from fans and critics alike. With that film, he showcased a talent for not only crafting ridiculously over-the-top gore but also for keeping the audience grounded amidst the chaos. His Evil Dead film starts as a fairly grim-and-gritty reboot of the original, only to grow into a full-blown nightmare phantasmic by the end, completely with raining blood and a harbinger of the apocalypse.

For his follow-up, Álvarez delivered the even more highly acclaimed Don't Breathe in 2016. This film saw him restraining the more outright gory instincts of his Evil Dead film and instead specializing in suspense. Not only did this film earn love from fans and critics, but it also became one of Sony's biggest surprise hits of the year.

Both of these films showcase exactly why Álvarez would be a perfect fit for Sony's sequel. He can work within established franchises and make them feel fresh, through innovative uses of gory-yet-effective body horror and white-knuckled suspense. His last film, The Girl in the Spider's Web, was clearly meant as his big foray into adult blockbusters for Sony but ultimately didn't do so well at the box office.

Venom 2 would be the perfect shot at redemption for both the Venom franchise and Álvarez.
