And here's where things get interesting. Tom Hardy's performance in this movie really is something: many will find it embarrassingly barmy and others will treat it like a workshop for Hardy to try out some new acting tics. Whatever your opinion, the end result sure isn't boring, and you can't fault Hardy's gonzo commitment to the part.

Unfortunately this version of Eddie Brock is a bit of a dullard as written: he's never really believable as this star journalist, and the character development isn't sufficient enough that the symbiosis really informs his arc throughout the movie in a particularly meaningful way.

Still, Hardy sells the WTF factor with all his might, and whatever you make of his performance, you really can't accuse him of just phoning it in.
