Vince Vaughn: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked
5 Awesome Performances...
5. Wes Mantooth - Anchorman
While Anchorman was definitely Will Ferrells shining moment, Vaughn offers a stand-out performance in a excellent cast of cameos. He's the perfect blend of hate and charm, playing a rival news anchor with a venomous hatred of Ron Burgundy, and an underlying secret (the pair are half-brothers according to a deleted scene.) Though the film doesn't strictly have an antagonist, since the narrative is very much driven by situational comedy, and Ron's adversity is his own creation, Mantooth is as close to a real villain as we get. The pair's conflicts provide some of the films best moments, including the instant-classic fight scene that turns into an all-out brawl between warring news team factions.
Mantooth is also far from a one-dimensional supporting character, and is given ample opportunity to show different sides to his character, and even redeeming himself somewhat with his final shots. The different facets he shows are always funny and push him from one-note cameo to truly memorable status, and we can only hope Adam McKay and Will Ferrell deliver on their promise to bring him back in a big way for the sequel.
