War Dogs Review: 5 Ups & 4 Downs

3. Todd Phillips' Strong Action Direction

Todd Phillips is one of the most intriguing directors working today, largely because he's evolved so much throughout his career.

Phillips started off on acclaimed, successful frat comedies such as Road Trip and Old School, before graduating to the monster-hit Hangover franchise, which blended comedy with frantic, R-rated action.

Now, Phillips proves himself a capable action director in his own right, staging some genuinely impressive set-pieces, especially David and Efraim's mad drive through Iraq's much-feared Triangle of Death to deliver some guns.

Phillips could absolutely helm a straight-up action movie if he ever had the desire to, and it's simply encouraging to see him grow and mature as a filmmaker in this fashion. Bravo.
