Warcraft: 10 Reasons It's A Huge Disappointment
3. Duncan Jones' Direction Is A Total Mess
As brilliant as Duncan Jones' first two movies were (Moon and Source Code), Warcraft reeks of a director wholly out of his depth, tackling a budget that's almost $130 million more than either of his prior movies.
While Universal's meddling may be somewhat to blame, Jones' general direction is totally all over the place: as mentioned, the editing, visual effects and performances are a hot mess, and even Jones' shot selection just feels frequently uninspired, like we're watching a cheap costume drama from a no-name filmmaker.
The scene that best exemplifies how off-the-mark Jones' direction seems occurs late in the movie when a main character is killed off, but what should seem like an epic moment is curiously downplayed, draining the scene of almost all of its pathos and emotional potential. It's so bizarre considering how much we're asked to buy into said character throughout the film.
Then he's killed out of the blue and discarded for the remainder of the film with only one brief reference made to his death. How utterly bizarre and tone-deaf.
