Westworld: 10 Key Offbeat Westerns To Watch Next
1. Bone Tomahawk
This recent, somewhat grisly Western took the idea of a lawless landscape and inserted a modern day horror sensibility to eye-watering effect. Former big screen Wyatt Earp and iconic American Kurt Russell was at the forefront of the action, getting his mind blown alongside the unwary viewer.
Russell's Sheriff faced a wilder West than usual, when his attempt to rescue the unfortunate victims of a clutch of cannibals saw him confronted with the chilling reality of a truly horrific way of life. Richard Jenkins, Patrick Wilson and Matthew Fox were the upstanding co-stars who joined the leading man in reaching for the old timey puke bucket.
Writer/director S. Craig Zahler made his mark giving the established formula a stark and shocking twist. Like the Western itself, his concept was straightforward but none the less impressive for it.
It didn't exactly swipe a bag of gold in takings. Yet Bone Tomahawk is a fitting conclusion to this rundown, ably demonstrating the range of seemingly endless possibilities an apparently staid area of cinema can offer.
