In The Comics:

Speaking of Wendy Lawson, the version of the character seen in the comics couldn't be further away from the one seen in the film. Both retain the same stoic sensibilities, but a lot was changed, the character's gender the most obvious difference.

In the comics, Mar-Vell is a Kree agent sent to Earth to determine whether the planet could pose a threat to the Kree Empire. He goes by the name of Doctor Walter Lawson and gradually begins to fall in love with humanity, donning his Kree uniform to save humans from peril, including Carol Danvers.

Mar-Vell is later declared a traitor of the Kree, and resolves to protect Earth full-time. He changes his costume to become red, blue and gold, only to die several decades later in the aptly titled "Death of Captain Marvel" storyline.

As was previously mentioned, the Mar-Vell of the MCU is actually a Kree woman, portrayed by Annette Bening. She becomes a traitor to the Kree not because she intervenes on humanity's behalf, but because she realises that the Kree were persecuting the Skrulls. She attempts to pioneer a new form of light-speed travel to ferry the stranded Skrulls out of the Kree's reach, but is ambushed by Yon-Rogg and killed on Earth.

It looks as though Mar-Vell's legacy will be a brief one in the MCU, but at least it will live on through Danvers.
