What Does The Ending Of Logan Really Mean?
6. What Was With The Corn Syrup Sub-Plot?
As the narrative progresses, it turns out there's a nefarious farming corporation who harvest corn and produce corn syrup in vast quantities because apparently nobody in this universe drinks anything but energy drinks (which might explain why everyone is so eager to rip each other to shreds).
The farmers come into contact with Logan when he stays at the Munsons and the farming patriarch reveals that the company has ben turning off his water to try and force him to leave his farm in the middle of their intended expansion path. It's a sub-plot straight out of Shane, the single biggest narrative influence on the film, and while it's distracting, it does serve a purpose (though it's absolutely contrived).
Though it isn't explained nearly as well as it could have been, it turns out that the corn company are a false front for Alkali Transigen, who have been using the mutated corn (ironically) to infect the population with an anti-mutant "vaccine" that has cured the world of its mutant problem.
So it wasn't just an excuse for Logan and X-24 to chop up some rednecks.
