What Every Major Character Did After The Lord Of The Rings
3. Bilbo
Bilbo Baggins played a huge role in The Lord of the Rings. If it wasn't for him the Ring might have remained in Gollum's possession and the quest of the Fellowship might never have happened.
He first appears in the Hobbit, journeying with Thorin Oakenshield to reclaim the Lonely Mountain, which is when he finds the Ring. He manages to resist being corrupted by it in the way Gollum was, though it does grant him a longer than average life, as he celebrates his 111th birthday at the beginning of the Lord of the Rings.
He spends many of the last years of his life in Rivendell where he filled his time composing poetry and writing an account of his adventures in what would come to be known as the Red Book of Westmarch.
Because of his part in the destruction of the Ring he was allowed to journey with the elves to the Undying Lands, boarding a ship at the Grey Havens and sailing with Frodo. He was the oldest hobbit in Middle Earth when he left at the age of 131.
