Why The Mummy (1999) Is The PERFECT Action Movie

2. Summer Spectacle

As has been mentioned, the film has several good parts to make the sum of an amazing film. And while the comedic and horror elements shine, the action is where the film really finds its footing.

There are some absolutely terrific set pieces in the film. Perhaps what is most impressive is the sheer variety considering the homogeneous desert setting. The opening is an almost traditional war scene, which is distinct from firey boat escape.

From there, the tension builds and escalates. The sandstorm with Imhotep's face is suitably iconic while our heroes fly in on a bi-plane. All of this reaches a climax where Rick must rescue Evelyn, fend off Imhotep's undead royal guards, and figure out a way to turn an invincible mummy mortal in order to level the playing field. All of which happen simultaneously.

Even with victory in place, there is one last escape which features a swarm of flesh-eating scarabs while the tomb collapses around them. One of the best things about good Summer flicks is the pace. The Mummy is perfectly paced, giving just enough time for the film to breathe before thrusting the heroes from a bad situation into a worse one.

By the time you reach the halfway point of the film, chances are your popcorn bucket will need a refill.
