Having scored a big win with the first film - his star-maker movie - Smith returned to the sequel no doubt full of confidence for a similar success. Sadly though, the scriptwriters, director and casting team turned up with a misplaced sense of confidence in a shoddy product. And Johnny bloody Knoxville. From the outset, Smith is forced to push water up a hill, and the result is a larger than necessary performance that for some reason seeks to follow Knoxville's grotesque pantomime villain into the gutter, and which seems - obscenely - to believe that the comedy is actually any good. And it's that seemingly numb-headed commitment to the material that is the most distressing thing about it.
