7. Killing Phoenix X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)
Although Cyclops and Jean were item, its obvious that Wolverine developed a deep longing to be with her and may have even loved Jean before she was tragically killed at the end of X2. But with her apparent resurrection in X-Men: The Last Stand, it looks as though he had the opportunity to see her once more. Appearing at Alkali Lake the site where she had been killed in the previous film she encountered her lover, Cyclops and promptly disintegrated him with her newly unlocked power. You see, upon sacrificing herself she had risen again as Phoenix a powerful mutant alter-ego which Charles Xavier had previously tried to lock away inside her mind. But with Phoenix set loose, her destructive powers posed a threat to humans and mutants alike and she had to be stopped. Realising that he was the only one up to the task (due to his very own healing factor), Wolverine was forced to kill the woman he loved. Im the only one who can stop her, he says as the X-Men get everyone to safety. And as she attempts to disintegrate him with her newfound power, Wolverine slowly approaches. Save me, she begs and as Wolverine plunges his claws into her chest, he tragically kills the woman he loves in order to save her. Kleenex anyone?
